Bole is a small village and parish on the west bank of the Trent, 2 miles south-west of Gainsborough, containing about 1,163 acres of land, mostly a strong clay, except on the Trent bank, where it is a rich loamy marsh. Owing to the river having changed its ancient course, about 110 acres of land which adjoin this parish, are in Lincolnshire. Naturally the modern world has imposed it's footprint on the idyllic surroundings, but the Blot on the Landscape that is the nearby Power station can be kept out of photographs by careful use of Trees!
Church Farm which the Winks farmed for several
generations is opposite the lynch gate leading into the
Church, and a recent development has been the building
of a small row of houses behind the Farm house using
materials recycled from the farm's out buildings which
has resulted in a pleasant appearance without imposing
on the outlook. Bole is still a peaceful rural area and
the surrounding villages also maintain their
tranquillity, The origin of Church Farm appears to date
from 1394 when King Richard II granted leave to William
Rothwell to assign "eight acres of (arable) land and six
acres of Pasture" for the support of the Vicar of St
Martin's and his successors.

This is the Anglican Church in Bole where so many members of
the Winks family were christened
between 1724 and 1891. Between 1756 and 1776 the
children were christened in this church in the morning(?)
before being taken to the Taylor's family church in
Gainsborough for Baptism. Several family members are buried in the churchyard. The 5 Standing stones visible to the right of the Path are Winks, you can also see the Flat stone in the middle which is the marker for John Winks Senior and his Wife.
